Lenape Rainbow Crow - 2019
The Rainbow Crow was of special importance to the Lenape tribe, often seen just after the first frost of spring. This sight signalled to the tribes that crops would soon begin to grow, providing food, fodder, and natural medicine. The crow symbolised magic, new beginnings, and abundance after a harsh winter.
According to a Lenape creation myth, Rainbow Crow was chosen by Wise Owl to rescue the forest animals from a snowstorm. His enchanting voice and multicoloured feathers caught the Creator's attention, who gave him a blazing fire stick to bring back to Earth. However, the journey turned Rainbow Crow's feathers black, and the smoke ruined his beautiful voice. Though he saved the animals, he sacrificed much. The Creator ensured that Rainbow Crow would always be free, with his hoarse voice and smoky taste keeping him from being caged or eaten by men.
